City Council Questions School Committee Spending

The New Bedford City Council wants to know how the School Committee is spending its money.

During Thursday night's meeting, Councilors voiced concerns over a recent General Expense Budget Report dated Oct. 16, 2014. It shows that a majority of budgets within the school department have already spent over 50 percent of funds for FY15 less than four months into the school year.

Councilor at Large Linda Morad is curious about where that money is going.

Morad is also chair of the Committee on Finance and has requested a representative from the School Committee to attend its next meeting to provide insight to the spending.

There have also been multiple reports of not enough textbooks in the classrooms while teachers are forced to dispose of out-dated material.
