Carlos Rafael Sentencing Delayed To September
BOSTON (AP) _ The sentencing of a fishing magnate dubbed ``The Codfather'' will have to wait until September.
Carlos Rafael was indicted on more than two dozen counts, including tax evasion and falsifying fishing quotas, last year. Officials report his sentencing has been pushed back from Friday to Sept. 25.
Rafael is the face of Carlos Seafood, Inc. in New Bedford and one of the largest commercial fishing operations in the country. He pleaded guilty in March to federal charges of evading fishing quotas and smuggling money to Portugal.
Authorities say Rafael falsely claimed his boats caught haddock or pollock when they had actually harvested fish subject to stricter quotas. He could face several years in prison.
The disposition of Rafael's boats and permits remains a subject of debate.
