FAIRHAVEN — State police are investigating after a car carrier hit an overpass on I-195 in Fairhaven on Tuesday night.

Fairhaven Fire Chief Todd Correia said a car on the car carrier truck is thought to have been loaded too high up.

The car hit the Main Street overpass as the car carrier was traveling westbound on I-195 at around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, and was destroyed on impact, according to the chief.

Correia said the overpass "sustained minor damage" in the incident.

The crash also resulted in car parts left scattered over a 1,000-foot stretch of highway, resulting in minor damage to other vehicles traveling westbound.

No injuries were reported.

Local and state police responded to the crash along with a fire engine and two ambulances, according to Correia.

Traffic on Main Street was also temporarily blocked while Massachusetts' Department of Transportation conducted an inspection of the overpass.
