Supporters of the Cape Wind offshore wind project say they've submitted a petition with nearly 1,200 signatures in support of a Department of Energy loan guarantee for the project.

The petition was posted online by Cape Wind Now. The group says Cape Wind's clean energy is badly needed and the Energy Department should immediately proceed with the loan guarantee. They say the project proposed in 2001 has been senselessly delayed for too long.

The $2.6 billion, 130-turbine Cape Wind project planned for Nantucket Sound aims to be the nation's first offshore wind farm.

The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound, a Cape Wind opponent, has also submitted comments to the Energy Department. It argues the project would violate laws that protect the environment and wildlife and has an uncertain future because of pending lawsuits against it.  (Associated Press)
