Earlier this week, the Mass. Clean Energy Center and Cape Wind mutually agreed to terminate a lease agreement at the New Bedford Marine Commerce Terminal.

If the project ever got off the ground, Cape Wind would have used the terminal as a staging area before erecting the turbines off Nantucket Sound.

Audra Parker, President and CEO of Save Our Sound, says the agreement was shakey to begin with, since Cape Wind also had a lease option in Quonset.

Parker speculates the final nail in the coffin may have been in 2010, when the project revealed how much average consumers would be paying for electricity produced by the wind farm.

Audra says Cape Wind may try to revive itself in the future, since it still holds a lease on 46 square miles of Nantucket Sound. She adds several organizations are challenging the issuance of that lease in federal court.
