signing veteran forward Brian Gionta to a one-year deal for the remainder of the 2017-18 season Sunday.

Gionta, who last played in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabers in the 2016-2017 season, recently captained the USA National team that competed in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Gionta played in all five of Team USA's games, prior to the team being bounced from competition in the quarterfinals.

Though the veteran hasn't played this season in the NHL, he had a solid season last year with the Sabers. In 82 games, the 39-year-old totaled 35 points, including 15 goals and 20 assists.

Spending the first 12 years of his 15-year career with the New Jersey Devels and Montreal Canadians, and the final three with Buffalo, Gionta has totaled 588 points, 289 goals and 299 assists, in 1,006 games. He also won a Stanley Cup back in the 2002-03 season with the Devils.
