Berkley Craigslist Posting Could Be Empty Boxes But Could Be Demons

A recent posting from Berkley on the SouthCoast Craigslist site has me wondering if the person who picks up these free boxes knows what kind of chance they’re taking.

There’s not much to go on from the actual listing. The title is “FREE (Berkley)” and the description is “Free.” That’s it.

These three boxes look innocent enough. One of them is a “log cabin bank” that appears to be a souvenir from a national park, although I can’t quite make out which one from the photo. It’s just a little wooden log cabin with a slot for dropping coins and folded-up bills to save up for something nice – perhaps your own life-sized log cabin.

The other two boxes appear to be made for keepsakes, something in which you might keep some jewelry or important papers or other odds and ends.

It’s also something that could be imprisoning a negative spirit.

Have you ever heard of the Dybbuk Box? It’s a story that began nearly 20 years ago, when a man named Kevin Mannis posted on eBay a wooden box he got from a Polish Holocaust survivor who claimed the box held the spirit of a dybbuk, a spirit in Jewish mythology that seeks to possess a human host. Mannis claimed the box had brought him nightmares and bad luck, and thus the legend of the Dybbuk Box was born.

Eventually, the box ended up in the museum of haunted objects owned by Ghost Adventures star Zak Bagans. Music superstar Post Malone has openly discussed a run of bad luck he endured after encountering the box, and Bagans later opened it – presumably releasing the spirit contained inside – in a four-part Ghost Adventures special in 2020. He claimed to see eyes manifesting from a mist that was released from the box, and that he saw the entity that had been contained inside crouching in the corner of the room right after its release.

However, in 2021, Mannis admitted that he had made the whole story up, and that the box was just something he’d found at a yard sale. Of course, that hasn’t stopped the concept of a “dybbuk box” becoming an urban legend.

So while there probably isn’t any kind of demon or bad ghost contained in these boxes, there’s no guarantee there isn’t one, either.

As of this writing, the Craigslist post is 10 days old. There’s a good chance somebody’s already claimed these three boxes. That means there’s also a possibility they’ve already let loose some kind of negative spirit into their home.
