Azorean Whaleboats Race Off West Beach

The seventh annual Azorean Whaleboat Regatta is happening this weekend in waters off West Beach in New Bedford.

A major competition will happen on Sunday, with boats from the Azores, New Bedford, and Mystic, Conn. taking part.

Judy Downey of the Azorean Maritime Heritage Society says the Azorean boats are the real deal.....

New Bedford rowers were competing in the Azores two years ago.

Downey says the Azorean boats should have the upper hand this weekend. She says races like this are comonplace every day in the Azores during the summer.

The races are taking place Saturday and Sunday, with an awards ceremony Sunday evening.
