New Bedford Connect, an unique event that will guide New Bedford's homeless population to something better, is taking place today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the downtown YMCA.

Dozens of volunteers from businesses and local organizations will converge for this one day mission. Area dentists, veterans assistance, resources and many other services for residents who are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless, will gather in one place to provide outreach for those in danger of homelessness and losing shelter.

New Bedford Connect is part of the New Bedford Homeless Service Providers Network, along with the City of New Bedford and a host of area members. Volunteers will be needed to record data from homeless participants, as well as for set up, general organization and cleaning up after the event. One task will be to assist homeless residents in obtaining a photo ID from the Registry of Motor Vehicles.

To volunteer, contact info@riseupforhomes.com.

The event is possible through the support of local partners including First Citizens' Federal Credit Union, Bay Coast Bank, Southern Mass Credit Union, Boston Medical Center Healthnet Plan and YMCA Southcoast.
