Massachusetts is facing a childcare crisis. According to childcare advocates, it's estimated that after the COVID-19 shutdown, 30 percent of childcare facilities in the Commonwealth did not reopen, and more than 7,000 slots are going unfilled.

The Common Start Coalition, a statewide group made up of childcare facilities, parents and advocates, is raising awareness about the crisis and looking for help from the state and federal governments.

Coalition members Jordan Latham, a parent, and Jennie Antunes, Education Director at Northstar Learning Centers, spoke this week with Townsquare Sunday about the childcare crisis, and the dilemma facing both childcare facilities and families.

Townsquare Sunday is a public affairs program, heard every Sunday at 6 a.m. on 1420 WBSM. The program focuses on individuals and organizations that are working to improve the quality of life in Greater New Bedford.
