$25M in Capital Funding to Renovate UMassD STEM Facility

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Executive Office of Administration & Finance (A&F) announced that it will commit $25 million in capital funding for the construction and renovation of a STEM facility to advance science, technology, engineering, and math programs in the colleges of engineering, arts and sciences, and nursing at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth campus. Representative Antonio F. D. Cabral (D-New Bedford), Chairman of the House Committee on Bonding, Capital Expenditures and State Assets, added the authorization for this specific purpose in the general government bond bill, which was signed into law this afternoon.

“UMass Dartmouth is committed to making strategic investments in its facilities to best serve and prepare its students for the workforce demands of today,” said Rep. Cabral. “One of the university’s main priorities, a state-of-the-art science and engineering building, is now well on its way towards becoming a reality thanks to the allocation of $25 million in state capital funds.”

This funding announcement follows the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education’s recent approval of a Ph.D. program in STEM Education at UMass Dartmouth.

“New lab equipment and improved working spaces will enhance learning and attract young, passionate talent,” explained Rep. Cabral. “With the approval of the new STEM Education Ph.D. program just last month, this type of investment is critical for the university’s continued growth.”
