The U.S. Department of Transportation is awarding the Port of New Bedford a $15.4  million grant to improve the port's infrastructure and help with the removal of contaminated materials.

The so-called "BUILD" grant was announced Thursday by the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation.

The funding will be used to extend the port's bulkhead, creating room for 60 additional commercial vessels, and additionals sites for offshore wind staging. The project will also remove 250,000 cubic yards of contaminated materials.

Senator Elizabeth Warren called the grant "wonderful news."

Back in July Senators' Warren, Markey and Rep Bill Keating sent a letter to Transportation Secretary Elizabeth Chao, urging her to award the grant to the Port of New Bedford.
