Should the City of New Bedford set aside "taxpayer dollars" each year for the operation and maintenance of the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center?  The city is currently negotiating with "Z" representatives, and the City Council has recommended $150,000 to cover costs for the fiscal year that ends on June 30.  The City of New Bedford owns the building.  This caller to WBSM's Phil Paleologos suggested other communities should chip in, as well....

But other callers were dead-set against sending any "public" money to the Zeiterion.  Several callers suggested raising ticket prices, rather than using public funds to maintain the building.  "Z" Director Katherine Knowles says its absolutely critical that the financial status of the theatre be stabilized.  Knowles says she's already taken steps to hold down costs, including reducing staff members from 12 to 3, as well as pay cuts.
