BOSTON (AP) - A cold snap has the S-word returning to the lips of Boston-area commuters: "S'' as in snow.

The National Weather Service warns that the white stuff could fall at least briefly across a wide swath of Massachusetts on Thursday.

Forecasters say snow - at times mixed with rain - may fall in a band stretching from Greater Boston to Worcester. Snowfall is more likely in western Massachusetts, Connecticut and Vermont, especially in higher elevations.

If it does snow, it's not expected to accumulate - rain will wash it away, and the ground isn't yet frozen.

Parts of northern New England already saw their first snowfalls last week.

The mere mention of snow can unnerve Bostonians, who were buried in 9 feet of it in the epic winter of 2015.
