Two car fires are under investigation in New Bedford.

New Bedford Fire Chief Michael Gomes tells WBSM News the first fire took place at around 1pm on Kempton Street across from New Bedford District Court. The parked car was fully engulfed in flames when the Fire Department arrived. Gomes says the heat from the fire was so intense, it melted the siding on the nearby Humphrey, Covill & Coleman Insurance office. The fire was under control in a matter of minutes. Gomes says the fire appears to have started in the passenger compartment of the vehicle. It is not deemed suspicious, though the cause remains under investigation.

A second car fire is also under investigation. Gomes says his department is not releasing specifics at this time, as the fire has been deemed suspicious. Gomes says the fire took place in the evening, and witnesses saw at least two men running from the direction of the burning car.
