The Town of Acushnet has taken steps to eliminate the town's Board of Public Works, and turn over their responsibilities to the Board of Selectmen.

A special Town Meeting voted 125-35 Monday night to change the town's charter, and wipe the B-P-W off the books.

The change still requires a vote by the state Legislature.

Selectman David Wojnar supported the change, and said it was "nothing personal" against the present board....

Wojnar says once the change takes effect, probably in the spring, the day to day management of public works issues will be handled by the Finance Director and Town Administrator, with Selectmen having the final say.

The Board of Public Works recently approved a dramatic increase in water rates for Acushnet.  That prompted citizens to petition Selectmen for a special Town Meeting to consider the charter change.
