A private wastewater treatment plant in Attleboro has been shut down after city officials determined it had not done enough to stem the foul odors blowing into nearby neighborhoods.

City Health Officer Dr. Christopher Quinn on Thursday ordered NewStreamH2O to stop operations until he and Health Agent Alan Perry are convinced that steps taken to eliminate or contain the odors — described as nauseating, fishy and like rotting corn — are effective.

Quinn tells The Sun Chronicle the company has not done enough fast enough to stem the stink that seeps out of the plant periodically.

NewStream officials said they've worked continually on the problem and spent at least $200,000 over the last year. They said they are within weeks of stopping the releases and asked for more time.
