NEW BEDFORD - A pedestrian has been struck and killed as he was trying to make his way across Cove Street in New Bedford's South End Thursday afternoon.

New Bedford Police say the 57-year-old man from Acushnet was crossing Cove Street near Mee Hong Restaurant around 5:30 P.M. Thursday when he was struck by a car.

The man was transported to St. Luke's Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. His identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The vehicle that struck the man was driven by a 25-year-old New Bedford woman. Police tell WBSM News she remained at the scene of the accident and is cooperating with investigators.

New Bedford Police, along with Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office are investigating the accident.
