New Bedford Welcomes Replica of Magellan's 16th-Century Tall Ship

A piece of history is set to sail into New Bedford Harbor over the holiday weekend. Nao Trinidad, a replica of the 16th-century tall ship, is scheduled to arrive on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4.

Nao Trinidad will be open for tours at Pope's Island Marina from Sept. 5-10 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

If you'd like to get a unique look at the tall ship, there will be an opportunity to board the New Bedford launch. The boat will take you out into New Bedford Harbor to give you and your family some terrific views of the Nao Trinidad and the waterfront.

If you are not familiar with the history of the original Nao Tinidad, her Portuguese ties are sure to be a big hit for many residents of the SouthCoast.

The Nao Trinidad vessel was part of the fleet of boats that Ferdinand Magellan used to sail around the world, becoming the first in history to accomplish that amazing feat. The replica tall ship's visit to New Bedford is timely, as this year marks the 500th anniversary of Magellan's historic trip around the world.

“While at port, the ship is a floating museum and people are welcome to tour the ship, interact with the crew, and visit the exhibition on board,” said Ulises Custodio of the Spanish-based nonprofit Nao Victoria Foundation. “The arrival of the Nao Trinidad is a great opportunity to educate visitors and residents about Magellan’s circumnavigation of the globe."

Tickets to board the Nao Trinidad are $15 for adults, $5 for children and $35 per family.
