Another New Bedford store owner fights back. According to Detective Captain Steve Vicente, a male walked into the J&L Mini Mart on Maxfield Street last night, grabbed the 55-year-old store owner, and threatened him with a knife. The owner managed to pull free of the suspect's grasp, and grabbed a baseball bat, chasing the suspect out of the store.

The suspect was caught at the corner of Mill and Ash St, after a foot chase involving the store owner and his family and friends. The knife was recovered a block away.

Police arrived and took custody of 22-year-old Joseph DeFreitas and charged him with armed assault with intent to rob. He will be arraigned as soon as he is released from the hospital, where he is currently being treated for head injuries.
