Flashbacks to 2012's City Council pay raise debacle came to mind Wednesday as Mayor Jon Mitchell suggested the possibility of a veto over the Council's choice for City Clerk.

The job is being made available by way of current clerk, Rita Arruda's retirement.

39 people have applied for the position, including former Councilor Denis Lawrence, who is the rumored favorite among the Council.

Speaking on his weekly radio program, Mitchell says he has limited say in the Council's final choice.

Mitchell says he would consider to veto the Council's decision if he feels the selection process was not fair and open. The Mayor says thus far, he's seen little transparency to the process.
