Members of the New England Regional Fishery Management Council were in New Bedford Tuesday night, listening to suggestions from the community on the best ways to manage fisheries in the North Atlantic.

Mayor Jon Mitchell urged the Council to consider the success of New Bedford's fishing industry in future decisions.....

The Mayor suggested the Council contnue the practice of rotating the closure of fishing grounds because they allow boats to keep fishing, while limiting bycatch and environmental disturbances.

Several speakers said they were opposed to permanent closings because "they don't work."

The hearing took place at the Fairfield Inn on the waterfront
