New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell has made an official move to change the City's charter, allowing for four-year mayoral terms instead of the current two-year terms.

Mitchell presented the City Council with the proposal on Wednesday, saying the modification would bring stability to the City's executive branch, allow the mayor to focus on long-term improvements, and cutting down on the relative amount of time spent fundraising and campaigning for re-election.

Mitchell has included an amendment to the proposal, which would not allow him to take advantage of the new term length if it is approved by the City Council.

The proposal will be taken up at the next regular City Council meeting.
