A jet belonging to the 104th Fighter Wing of the Massachusetts Air National Guard has crashed in a remote mountainous area near Washington, D.C.

Searchers say they have found a lot of debris, but there is no sign of the pilot.

The Massachusetts Air National Guard reports just before losing communication at 9:05 this morning, they received an in-flight emergency call from the pilot.

The F-15C left Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield this morning and was headed to New Orleans for an upgrade in radar equipment.

Virginia Air National Guard members are headed to the crash site in Deerfield Valley, VA to assist in the search and investigation. Crews will be using radar to search through deep wooded and hilly areas of western Virginia, but officials point out the pilot has the training to remain safe in hazardous situations.
