A Republican candidate for Congress stopped by New Bedford's Pier 3 Wednesday to talk about the local fishing industry.

John Chapman spoke with leaders in the industry as well as some local elected officials at the Black Whale restaurant.

Chapman says his main goal, if elected, is to directly advocate for the Southcoast's fishing industry.

Chapman is running against incumbent Bill Keating to represent the 9th District of Massachusetts.

According to a recent WGBH poll, Chapman is gaining momentum and holds a small lead ahead of Keating.

The Republican adds during his campaign, he has heard support from both Republicans and Democrats in the region.
