NEW BEDFORD - The New Bedford Firefighters Association, IAFF Local 841, officially endorsed Hugh Dunn for Ward 3 City Council during Friday's meeting of the Professional Firefighters of Massachusetts.

“I am truly honored and humbled to have the support of New Bedford’s firefighters – I have great respect for the courageous and selfless work that they do. If elected, I promise to continue working with them to keep our residents safe,” Dunn said in a statement received Tuesday evening.

A former aide to Congressman Bill Keating, Dunn is one of six candidates vying for the Ward 3 seat left vacant by Henry Bousquet, who resigned earlier this month.

While working with Keating, Dunn has experience securing federal funding for local fire departments through the SAFER grant that subsidizes some staffing costs.

“Hugh understands the importance that first responders play in keeping our community safe – he’ll be an effective and thoughtful councilor with a proven commitment to our city,” said Local 841 president Steve Peixoto.

A Preliminary Ward 3 Special Election will be held March 28th to narrow the field down to two candidates, who will face off for the Ward 3 Special Election April 25th.
