Drivers constantly speed through crosswalks all over the city. The New Bedford City Council hopes to curb this speeding and keep senior citizens safe while crossing city streets.

During Tuesday evening's meeting, Councilor Naomi Carney filed a home rule petition that was signed by the entire body.

Carney explains the need for the petition.

In order for the Council to create these "safe zones", the petition must be signed by the mayor and approved by the legislature.

Currently only Quincy has a similar ordinance, which was created in 2005.
