Freetown Police Investigating Serious Head-On Crash in Assonet

ASSONET (WBSM) — Freetown Police are investigating a serious head-on crash that occurred Saturday in the village of Assonet.

According to police, multiple 911 calls came in at about 5:40 p.m. on April 20 reporting a two-vehicle crash on South Main Street just south of the Stop & Shop Distribution Center.

Upon arrival, police and fire crews found two vehicles that sustained heavy damage as a result of a head-on collision. One person was trapped in a vehicle and the “Jaws of Life” were used to extricate them.

Police said both drivers sustained serious injuries and were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford.

According to police, preliminary investigation indicates a 2105 Acura TLX sedan operated by a 26-year-old man crossed over the center line and struck a 1972 Plymouth Roadrunner, operated by a 68-year-old male, head-on.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation by Freetown Patrolman Ryan Pereira, Detective Shane Kelley and Sergeant Nicholas Drinkwine, who is assigned as the department’s Accident Reconstruction Officer.

"The crash on South Main Street today is deeply concerning, and our thoughts are with the injured individuals," Freetown Police Chief Scott M. Rose said. "Our team is actively investigating the incident to determine its cause. Community safety remains our utmost priority, and we urge anyone with information to come forward to aid our investigation."

South Main Street was closed in the area of the crash until about 7:55 p.m.
