Yesterday was Free Cone Day at Ben and Jerry's scoop shops across the country, and area stores dished up more ice cream and frozen yogurt to customers than ever before.

"Free Cone Day is our favorite day of the year - it's our biggest holiday," said Ben & Jerry's Chief Marketing Officer, Dave Stever. "We get to thank our fans by showing them that we love them by giving away over a million scoops of ice cream."

At the shop in North Eastham, Mass. on Cape Cod, Manager Hailey Davis said her team scooped 6,290 cones between noon and 8 p.m. yesterday, which was an increase of more than 1,100 scoops from the previous year's event.

When my wife and I arrived at the shop at 7:30 p.m. last night, the line was still wrapped around the building, as customers of all ages gathered to enjoy their favorite flavors. Small children had big chocolate smeared faces as they devoured their frozen treats while teens, housewives, senior citizens and others waited patiently for their turn in line.

Even so, the line moved swiftly as employees kept customers steadily moving through the shop, dishing up cups and cones of flavors like Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, Salted Caramel Blondie and Raspberry frozen yogurt.

One woman said she'd been to the store three times that day to get her ice cream fix. Another man said it was his fifth year to attend the event.

Free Cone Day has been held annually for 36 years, ever since its inception in 1979. If you missed this year's event, you'll get another chance to get a free scoop in 2016. Watch benjerry.com for details.
