Preparing your taxes is never a joyful experience. Even if you think that you’re going to get a hefty refund, the process is time consuming and oftentimes complicated. So realizing that the 2014 tax season is fast approaching likely isn’t cause for rejoicing. And that’s before you find out why this year could deliver the most frustrating tax season yet!

According to Money Magazine‘s interview with Nina Olson, a taxpayer representative, this year it might take you longer to get your tax refund for a few different reasons. First of all, the IRS needs an cash infusion to do its job. Not only were nearly 8,000 agency jobs cut since 2010, but its training budget has dropped 87 percent and its overall budget was slashed by approximately 8 percent during the same period.

To make matters worse, Congress has only added to the agency’s responsibilities. Now the IRS also “plays a key role in the administration of Obamacare,” Money reports. If you have a question about your taxes, the wait at the DMV may seem like a cake walk because last year Olson reports that only 61 percent of taxpayer calls and 47 percent of correspondence even got a response!

Then there is the little matter of the government shutdown in October. That snafu and the onset of automatic spending cuts may have set the IRS behind schedule even more than it already was.

So even if you prepared your own taxes in the past, this might be a great year to hire a professional to handle the job for you. The great folks at Jackson Hewitt are always happy to help and they make things easy-peasy for you. Now pick up the phone and save your sanity this tax season.
