With Memorial Day weekend upon us, area residents may be more apt to take advantage of the warmer weather by going out on a boat. The Coast Guard is advising boaters to take the proper precautions when heading out onto the ocean.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Jarrod Pomajzl tells WBSM News alcoholic consumption should be kept to a minimum on seafaring vessels. "The Coast Guard always is going to recommend that people boat sober. If you do want to enjoy alcoholic beverages on your boat, have someone operate the vessel who has not partaken in any alcoholic beverages," says Lt. Pomajzl.

According to the Coast Guard, 610 people died in recreational boating accidents in 2014, with alcohol being the primary contributing factor in a majority of those deaths.

Lt. Pomajzl advises boaters to wear life jackets, dress in layers, and to be mindful of the weather and other environmental factors.
