The City of New Bedford has put a freeze on hiring for the foreseeable future.

The City's Chief Financial Officer, Ari Sky, sent a memo to department heads informing them of the hiring freeze, citing excessive snow removal costs, expiring grants, and a multitude of other expenses as the cause for the immediate action.

Sky tells WBSM News the City now needs to formulate a plan that will maintain services without digging a deeper fiscal hole.

Sky says the City is only projecting a 1% revenue gain during this fiscal year, which will not offset the costs the City currently faces.

In addition to the hiring freeze, any department requests over $5,000 must be submitted to the purchasing agent and the CFO for approval.
