City Council Debates New “Problem Properties” Ordinance
Mayor Jon Mitchell is touting a new ordinance to address “problem properties” in the city, and that’s not sitting well with some City Councilors.

The Council debated the recently-drafted ordinance Thursday, which would bill property owners for excessive police calls or code violations. Several councilors took issue with the Mayor’s holding of a press conference Tuesday to promote an ordinance that doesnt exist yet, and expressed concerns that people may hesitate to call the police on a “problem property” because of such a measure.
Councilor-At-Large Brian Gomes doesnt want another city ordinance created targeting landlords, that cant be enforced.

The Council sent the proposed ordinance to its Ordinance Committee for further review and possible changes. Chairman Steven Martins says the item will be on the agenda for the Committee’s February meeting.
