Polar Park in Worcester showed off some serious girl power over the weekend with its annual Women in Sports game.

It may not have been the Worcester Red Sox' first time honoring local girls and women in sports throughout the game, but it was a first in one aspect: announcing.

For the first time in WooSox history, there was a female PA announcer and I had the honor of filling those big shoes.

Taking the Mic

For those who don't know, I do have some experience behind the mic. Yes, you hear me mornings during The MGM Show on Fun 107, but I've also been the In-Arena Host for the Boston Bruins for nearly a decade.

I've even had the opportunity to serve as PA announcer for the Bruins' Women in Sports Nights the past few years. However, I hadn't announced baseball since my days at Bridgewater State.

What an Honor

When I was asked to announce for Worcester, I jumped at the chance. Yes, I hadn't said "now batting" for a little while, but it's like riding a bike.

Plus, there are a lot of similarities with sports pregame: getting in sponsor names and promotions, announcing special honorees like those throwing out the first pitch or saying "play ball" and of course, announcing the starting lineups.

Game Time

I'll be honest, there were definitely some nerves going into the night. I wanted to deliver and make sure I had the flow and pacing down to make the night seem as normal for the fans and players as possible.

I've got to give it up to WooSox PA announcer Ben DeCastro for the warm welcome and guidance throughout the game as well. He gave me some great tips and a few pronunciations that really helped.

I've also been a fan of the WooSox since the PawSox days, so having this opportunity really meant a lot.

The crew at Worcester is amazing and very talented. The field and stadium are pristine. If you haven't attended a game in the Woo, I highly recommend it. It's beautiful, clean, offers great views and has all the charm and fun that you expect at a Triple-A ballpark.
