Ward Five City Councilor Kerry Winterson thinks having Bill Clinton campaign for his wife on the street outside the Buttonwood Park Warming House should not have happened.

Winterson says the event should have been held just east of the polling spot, in the park's softball field or closer to the Lawler Library.

Winterson says he's made the suggestion to the Mayor's office, just in case there are more high-profile campaign visits in the future. "We want people to come obviously and the City of New Bedford gets recognition, but the event itself, we've got to plan it away from the polling areas, that's my main concern," said Winterson.

Winterson fears that some voters, especially older ones or those with mobility issues, saw the crowd and may have kept on driving, deciding to vote later in the day.

Mayor Jon Mitchell has dismissed criticism about Clinton's visit, saying no one was prevented from voting and the fomrer President's visit lasted only a few minutes.
