Westport firefighters and crews from around the region Monday afternoon beat down a fire that caused heavy damage to a historic home at 625 Sanford Road.

At approximately 3:13 p.m., the Westport Fire Department received a report of a structure fire. Arriving personnel reported smoke and fire from the rear of the structure, a single-family home built in the 1800s and listed as a historical house. The fire was under control within 45 minutes but caused substantial damage to the tune of around $50,000, according to a release from the fire department.

Westport was assisted by Dartmouth District 3, Tiverton, and Little Compton fire departments at the scene. There were no injuries reported.

The fire came around 24 hours after fire ravaged a summer cottage on Cadmans Neck in Westport. That fire also drew mutual aid from around the region. The causes of both fires remain under investigation.
