WAREHAM (WBSM) — A Wareham facility for disabled veterans is looking for some help putting on a special event for them in honor of Memorial Day.

The Kendrick House, located on High Street, is a former hotel that now serves as a home for disabled veterans. The staff is planning on holding a first-ever Memorial Day cookout for the residents this weekend.

“We have 16 residents here, all veterans,” Kendrick House employee April Cincotta-Clark told WBSM. “We wanted to do something a little different this year. Most of them don’t have family close by, some not at all and it gets very repetitive for them day to day here.”

In addition to the cookout, the plan is to have games of cornhole and music .

“Most of them can’t be too active so it won’t be a whole lot, but we are going to try to make it at least a little special for them,” Cincotta-Clark siad. “I’m hoping people might have some more ideas for us as well as I discuss it with everyone.”

However, the Kendrick House needs a little help. Cincotta-Clark said there is a need for outside tables and foldable chairs. Anyone who is willing to loan some for the day can contact Cincotta-Clark at (910) 973-0115.

The plan is to hold the cookout on Memorial Day, but with some rain in the forecast, it may be moved back to Sunday instead.

“We really just want to make it fun for them,” Cincotta-Clark said. “Everyone here is excited that we are able to start grilling again.”
