A Rhode Island animal shelter was reeling on Monday after discovering rat poisoning strategically placed around its property.

Vintage Pet Rescue in Foster has filed a police report after an upsetting morning that has left staff members concerned for their precious animals.

“We’re still trying to process why someone would do this,” Vintage Pet Rescue said.

Vintage Pet Rescue is a nonprofit organization in Foster, Rhode Island, dedicated to rescuing and providing loving homes for senior and special-needs dogs. The rescue relies solely on the community's generosity to continue giving medical care, food and a safe environment for the dogs.

On Monday morning, the rescue found several large pieces of rat poison placed on top of the fences surrounding the shelter. Pictures shared by Vintage Pet Rescue show a package of rat poison ripped and its contents dispersed on the fence.

If a dog got curious, this could be fatal.

“Unfortunately, we did catch Bug eating a large piece, so he had to go to the vet immediately while we asked our volunteers to search the yard for other pieces,” the shelter said. “Bug will thankfully be OK, but he’ll need medication for the next three weeks.”

The shelter has filed a police report and is reviewing its camera footage to see if the culprit can be identified.

“I can’t put into words how upset we are over this,” the shelter said.

Anyone with details about the incident is asked to contact the Foster Police Department.
