Fate of Mohegan Sun’s Seasons Buffet Still Uncertain

On any given weekend during the cold winter months, my wife and I might jump in the car for a nice ride to Uncasville, Connecticut, and the Mohegan Sun Casino. Neither of us are big gamblers, but the casino makes for great people-watching, is a bit warmer than the park for getting some wintertime steps in, and of course, there is the Seasons Buffet.

For about $30 per head, the buffet offered great prime rib, shrimp, awesome soups, fabulous desserts, and a whole lot of other mighty fine and decadent delicacies.

The Sun opened on October 12, 1996, and quickly became an alternative to the larger and less personal Foxwoods Casino a few miles away in Ledyard, Connecticut. I prefer Mohegan Sun's layout and atmosphere to Foxwoods, which opened as a bingo hall in 1986.

Before the pandemic, the "all-you-can-eat" buffet was a big attraction at both Connecticut casinos, just as it had been for the many casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Some Las Vegas buffets have re-opened but not the ones at the Connecticut casinos, and their future remains murky.

Foxwoods completed a massive redesign of its Rainmaker Buffet just in time for the pandemic. It has not re-opened, and it's not clear when it will.

There were originally two buffets at Mohegan Sun: Sunburst Buffet and Seasons Buffet. Sunburst Buffet was closed, and a new $10 million dollar remodeled Seasons Buffet opened in 2011. Seasons Buffet was a huge draw until it closed due to COVID.

Last week, Mohegan Sun announced a $15 million renovation that doesn't appear to include the re-opening of Seasons Buffet. Public Relations Manager Cody Chapman tells me the future of the buffet has "yet to be determined."

"Plans regarding the buffet are still in evaluation by Mohegan Sun leadership," Chapman said. "We should have more information to share soon."

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I'd say the odds of Seasons Buffet re-opening as it was are pretty long.
