Mashantucket Pequot Schemitzun Pow Wow Near Foxwoods Casino
Some years back, when the kids were still small, my wife and I stumbled upon the Mashantucket Pequot Schemitzun Pow Wow while taking a Sunday drive in Connecticut. It was a fabulous discovery.
Since I first attended the Pow Wow, not far from the Foxwoods Resort Casino, Schemitzun: Feast of Green Corn and Dance has grown, and so has its appeal.
Pow wow organizers welcome visitors to "join our annual family-friendly celebration as we usher in the 2022 harvest season and give thanks to the Creator for our rich heritage while honoring our ancestors, warriors, veterans, and elders."
Schemitzun "features traditional and contemporary tribal dance exhibitions, drum and live music, and plenty of authentic Native American-made crafts."
The event is at the Mashantucket Pequot Cultural Grounds. Guests park at the Foxwoods hotels or the Mashantucket Pequot Museum & Research Center parking lots and take a shuttle bus to the pow wow.
The location is described as a "17th century Eastern Woodland Village" featuring numerous exhibits and "fascinating demonstrations of traditional Pequot cultural practices – including fire-pit cooking, wampum, and fish net making, loom bead-making, and basketry."
Schemitzun is one of my favorite annual events. I missed it when, like everything else, it went on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year, Schemitzun is Saturday and Sunday, August 27 and 28, 2022, in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
There is an admission fee: kids 5 and under are free; ages 6-12 are $8; ages 13-54 are $10; ages 55 and up are $8.
