Hundreds of UMass Dartmouth students leave campus each year and perform public service work in surrounding communities.

Senior Vice Chancellor Gerry Kavanaugh tells WBSM News, UMass Dartmouth prides itself on its civic engagement programs and helping out at community organizations.

"We want our students to learn community service and to learn community engagement. It gives them them an opportunity, after graduation, to make it a career and a vocation," said Kavanaugh.

The university hosted a Civic Engagement Summit on Friday, with speakers, discussions and awards presented to those who achieved special distinction in the area of civic leadership.

Kavanaugh says all communities in the Southcoast need help in one way or another, and getting students involved in civic engagement is a good way to give back.
