New Bedford firefighters and volunteers from the United Way of Greater New Bedford are spending the day distributing toys to several different area organizations.

The 14th annual New Bedford Firefighters Union Toy Drive enlisted the help of nearly 20 local businesses and collected about 3,000 toys for needy children in Greater New Bedford.

New Bedford Fire Captain Rick Shea tells WBSM News he's seen firsthand the need for a child to have a memorable Christmas.

The firefighters also collected $1,500 in donations, which is being used to buy even more toys.

The toys are being delivered today to the Donovan House, the YWCA, The Women's Center, Northstar Learning Centers, the Harbour House ,the Schwartz Center for Children, the Kennedy Donovan Center, and the SEMCOA Monarch House.
