Silver City Galleria was an economic powerhouse in Taunton for nearly 30 years before fizzling, fading and crumbling. Now, the former Galleria property is about to come back to life.

Silver City opened on March 1, 1992, off Route 24 and Route 140 in Taunton. The 1,000,000-square-foot, two-story mall included 120 stores, restaurants, movie theaters, a food court and more.

The mall attracted shoppers from throughout the area and beyond for years until, slowly but surely, the crowds thinned, the stores began to close and, eventually, the mall died.

Silver City Galleria Mall, which closed in 2020, was demolished in 2022.

In January 2024, the Atlanta-based Portman Industrial confirmed it had secured $29 million in construction financing for the first phase of Silver City Business Park, a 1.1-million-square-foot industrial business park at the former mall site.

Commercial Property Executive cites "public records" in reporting, "Portman Industrial purchased the 146-acre site back in 2021 from Thibeault Development for $75 million."

CPE says phase one will comprise a 248,435-square-foot building. "Plans call for more than 38 dock positions with two drive-in doors, 32-foot clear heights, over 270 parking spaces, 29 trailer drops, 3,000 amps of power capacity, and ESFR fire suppression," according to CPE.

When completed, Silver City Business Park will include four separate warehouses of 279,780, 486,720, 241,800 and 74,500 square feet. CPE reports the "three larger warehouses will be 55 feet tall, and the smallest will have a height of 47 feet."

FedEx initiated plans for a 560,000-square-foot distribution center at the former Silver City site in 2022. However, higher costs and declining revenues from online sales forced the company to rethink its expansion goals.
