In case you missed the 2022 Olympic opening ceremonies in Beijing on Friday, the Portuguese athletes came out of the gate swinging – the flag, that is – almost resulting in a catastrophic friendly-fire injury.

It followed an incredible laser display and light show that was packed full of propaganda and very expensive pyrotechnics. All politics aside, I gave the Chinese a solid golf clap for their dazzling display of past and present Winter games, shining a light on some of the world's most elite athletes.

Walking among the world's biggest stages, one can only imagine it to be breathtaking and exciting, but above all, extremely nerve-racking. With all eyes on you across the globe, the pressure is on, so don't trip. For the most part, it was a smooth ceremony – until one country decided to spark an instant replay.

As Portugal made its debut during the three-hour event, one of their flag bearers, Ricardo Brancal, got a little overenthusiastic with pride that almost took his teammate's eye out. I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw this; Nick Pedro from Taunton captured the moment perfectly and even added in his own comedic relief as a Portuguese commentator:

Adding his own flavor of Portuguese authenticity to the commentary, Pedro gave the Portuguese Kids a run for the money.

Hilariously accurate and highly amusing, Pedro is no stranger to the world of entertainment. Back in 2007, he was a finalist on Season 6 of American Idol, so it's no surprise he's a man of many talents.

As for Portugal, they currently have zero medals so far, but the Olympics are only a few days in at this point and so much can happen before the closing ceremonies arrive.
