City officials announced Friday that Parallel Products, the company that owns a recycling processing facility in the New Bedford Business Park, has abandoned plans to include sewage processing at its facility expansion project.

Live virus vaccines for monkeypox, COVID and smallpox are among the agents being developed at a new facility in the Dartmouth part of the New Bedford Business Park.

A pharmaceutical company is breaking ground Tuesday on a planned 45,000 square foot manufacturing facility in New Bedford that will be making vaccines for infectious diseases, including COVID-19.

The proposed New Bedford recycling facility would process trash, construction waste, sewage solids, and glass and plastic.

Mayor Jon Mitchell said the project "would pose risks to the health of nearby residents" and undermine the quality of life.

The donations to Mayor Mitchell from the vice president of Parallel Products pre-date the company's proposal for the Business Park.

The City of New Bedford has retained outside counsel to oppose Parallel Products' proposal to establish a processing facility in the New Bedford Business Park.

Tim Cusson says based on comments made by residents at last Monday's public meeting, the company will seek to eliminate all outdoor recycling at the Business Park site.

Parallel Products is not the bad guy, though its location may be a bad choice.
