VIRGINIA BEACH — A suspect has been arrested in connection to a hit-and-run crash in Virginia Beach on Friday that saw a New Bedford native struck and killed.

Phil Pereira, a 40-year-old father of three who was born and raised in New Bedford, was killed after his motorcycle was struck by a pickup truck on May 28.

According to a press release from the Virginia Beach Police Department, a vehicle matching the truck's description was found in Binghampton, New York.

Police said the vehicle's owner, 47-year-old Nghiem Nghi Nguyen, turned himself in and is currently being held in the Virginia Beach City Jail.

He has been charged with felony hit and run.

On May 28 at around 10:39 p.m., Pereira was driving eastbound on Ferrell Parkway in Virginia Beach when his motorcycle was hit by a dark blue Toyota Tundra turning left from Indian River Road.

The truck continued driving in the direction of the interstate, and Pereira succumbed to his injuries at the scene, according to police.

Pereira's family has been working to bring his body home to New Bedford, raising more than $14,000 on GoFundMe for the purpose.
