Southwick’s Zoo Announces the Sudden, Heartbreaking Loss of a Beloved Icon
"It is with profound sadness that we share difficult news with our zoo community," Southwick's Zoo shared. The Mendon, MA zoo announced the unexpected loss of one of its beloved animals, Thelma the white rhino. For many years, she brought joy to thousands of visitors.
"This loss has deeply affected our animal care staff, zoo team, and all who consider Southwick's Zoo family," the zoo added.
The zoo credited the collaborative work of its veterinary staff, the pathology team at Tufts Veterinary Hospital and experts at Capron Park Zoo and Roger Williams Park Zoo for their efforts in trying to determine the cause of death.

I was fortunate enough to meet the rhinos up close back in 2015. At the time, I was co-hosting The Rhode Show, a morning lifestyle show on WPRI in Rhode Island.
Part of my role was creating segments that brought me to some incredible locations in the area including getting up close and personal with the rhinos in Mendon. It's an opportunity I'll never forget, truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

A Lasting Legacy for Global Rhino Conservation
"Thelma was an extraordinary ambassador for her species. Through her calm demeanor and gentle personality, she inspired countless visitors to learn about rhino conservation and the challenges wild rhino populations face," the zoo said. "The encounters she participated in helped raise meaningful support for rhino conservation initiatives in southern Africa, directly contributing to efforts that protect this remarkable species."

Expert Veterinary Care for Companion Rhino Louise
Thelma's companion, appropriately named Louise, is currently off exhibit. She is receiving expert care and being monitored closely. "Until our veterinary team is confident that she has been fully evaluated and cleared, Louise will remain off exhibit," the zoo said.
Our thoughts are with the staff and veterinary team at Southwick's Zoo. We hope for a quick recovery for Louise.
