
Penguins Waddling Back to Providence’s Roger Williams Park Zoo
It's been 12 years since adorable penguins were waddling around at Roger Williams Park Zoo in Providence, but they're on the verge of a big return.
Since the exhibit closed in 2013, families and kids have long-anticipated their return, especially when it was announced they would be coming back.
Changes at Roger Williams Park Zoo
The zoo's beloved seal Bubba left his home at RWP in 2022 and has been enjoying his time at Woods Hole. However, he will be relocated to the Midwest as the aquarium prepares for renovations.

Though many visitors were saddened to see the empty tank at Roger Williams Park Zoo, their frowns turned upside down with the news of the penguins' arrival.

When Will the Penguins Get to Providence?
Hopes were high regarding the zoo's new residents, but when would they arrive? A total transformation of the area needed to be done, plus the penguins needed to arrive and also become acclimated with their new surroundings.

Now, we have an answer.
This Memorial Day weekend, a dozen adorable Humboldt penguins will call RWP Zoo home.

Humboldt penguins are native to area like Peru and Chile and considered "medium-sized" penguins standing at 15-18 inches tall and weigh about nine pounds.
RWP Zoo Shared Its Excitement for Its New Residents
In a recent press release, RWP Zoo issued this statement:
"The Zoo is committed to the long-term viability of Humboldt penguins through its involvement in the Species Survival Plan (SSP). This program facilitates collaborative breeding and transfer initiatives with other accredited zoos and aquariums, thereby promoting a healthy and genetically diverse population."
Roger Williams Park Zoo is now one of only 24 facilities in all of North America to care for the Humboldt penguins.
