One of the best Christmas presents I ever received was hockey equipment and a pair of skates. I was in the second grade, and I couldn't wait to break those skates in at our local rink. I was so eager that I found myself wishing Christmas would end quickly so the rinks would open.

Over Christmas vacation, I finally got the chance to put on my gear and head to public skating to try them out. Of course, like anyone learning to skate, it was a bumpy start. But the more I practiced, the more prepared I became to join an actual hockey team.

When you're looking for winter activities to enjoy as a family here on the SouthCoast, they can sometimes feel scarce—especially if you're seeking something active. For all the SouthCoast has to offer, we weren't exactly blessed with mountains for skiing and snowboarding. Most mountains are hours away.

Hiking trails can be enjoyable if you're into that sort of thing, but they can be challenging when you have little ones in tow. Colder temperatures can also make those hikes less appealing.

Public skating, however, is a fantastic way for the family to come together, stay active, and sharpen new skills. It's also relatively affordable—typically around $7.00 for ice time and another $7.00 to rent skates (if you don't already have your own).

Fortunately, there are several rink options in the area. No matter where you live on the SouthCoast, chances are you're not too far from a skating rink. Here's the 2025 public skating schedule for SouthCoast rinks.

New Bedford's Ice Skating Rinks of the Past

New Bedford's Brooklawn, Buttonwood, and Victory Parks drew huge crowds to their ice skating rinks. Check out some vintage photos courtesy of Spinner Publications of what it was like on the ice in the Whaling City back in the day.
