Southcoast Health is letting nothing go to waste as they partner with the United Way of Greater New Bedford.

All three hospitals in the system are now freezing their leftover non-dairy based soups for the United Way's Hunger Commission to be dispersed to local soup kitchens and shelters.

St. Luke's has been ladling out soup to the Hunger Commission since April, with spokesman Peter Cohenno calculating that 260 gallons of soup has been donated since then. "So that's more than 4,000 servings of soup which are going to people who visit soup kitchens or homeless shelters throughout the region."

In recent months, Tobey Hospital in Wareham and Charlton Memorial Hospital in Fall River have also joined in the initiative. And of course, all of the soups are healthy choices made with locally sourced natural ingredients.
